HELP SOMEONE IN NEED

When my colleague lost his job in 1994, I shared my work hours with him—first a day a week, then two, until eventually I gave him the full position after I found another job. It was not easy, but I remembered Jesus’ words in Philippians 2:4–5: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.”

By stepping aside so my colleague could provide for himself, I experienced the joy of living out Jesus’ teaching that “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). This act reminded me that true love often means sacrifice—placing others before ourselves, just as Jesus did for us.

  Devotional Thought

When I gave up my work hours so my colleague could have a job, I learned the heart of Jesus’ teaching: true love is sacrificial. Jesus calls us to care not only for ourselves but for others, even when it costs us something. In doing so, we reflect His selfless love and trust that He will provide for our needs.

Acronym – G.I.V.E.

  • GGive generously (Acts 20:35)

  • IInvest in others’ well-being (Phil. 2:4)

  • VValue people above possessions (Matt. 6:19–21)

  • EEmbody Christ’s love through action (John 13:34)

Prayer
“Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me that love is expressed through sacrifice. Help me to G.I.V.E. with joy—sharing what I have, valuing others above myself, and trusting You to take care of me. May my actions reflect Your heart in every situation. Amen.”
