Vua Ba-tư (old Persian kings)

The “old Persian kings” usually refers to the rulers of the Achaemenid Empire, the great empire that appears in the Bible during the time of Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, and Daniel.

  1. Cyrus the Great (559–530 BC)
  • Conquered Babylon
  • Allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple (Ezra 1)
  1. Cambyses II (530–522 BC)
  • Son of Cyrus
  • Conquered Egypt
  1. Bardiya (522 BC)
  • Ruled only briefly
  1. Darius I (522–486 BC)
  • Finished organizing the empire
  • Supported rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem (Ezra 6)
  1. Xerxes I (486–465 BC)
  • Usually identified as King Ahasuerus in Esther
  • Husband of Esther
  1. Artaxerxes I (465–424 BC)
  • Sent Ezra and later Nehemiah back to Jerusalem (Ezra 7; Nehemiah 2)
  1. Xerxes II (424 BC)
  2. Sogdianus (424–423 BC)
  3. Darius II (423–404 BC)
  4. Artaxerxes II (404–358 BC)
  5. Artaxerxes III (358–338 BC)
  6. Artaxerxes IV (338–336 BC)
  7. Darius III (336–330 BC)
  • Defeated by Alexander the Great, ending the Persian Empire

A simple Bible timeline is:

  • Cyrus → Ezra 1
  • Darius I → Ezra 6
  • Xerxes I (Ahasuerus) → Esther
  • Artaxerxes I → Ezra 7 and Nehemiah 2
